Utah: Second Chance Points Tournament
The tournament will take place on three separate nights over a two week period. The field will consist of 24 teams of 3 or 4 players each. The teams will be broken into two regions, North and South, and each region will be split into two groups, A and B. On the Preliminaries night, six teams will play in each of four separate venues in “round robin,” with the top 3 from each group advancing to regionals. On the Regionals night, six teams will play in two separate venues in round robin format. On the Finals night, six final teams from the two regional tournaments will meet join two by-invitation celebrity teams for a double elimination eight-team format tournament at Vivint Smart Home Arena.
Teams & brackets
Teams will be largely selected by invitation, with most coming from local high schools, either current players or recent graduates. There will be a limited number of open slots for other high quality teams. At the Finals, two by-invitation celebrity teams will join the six regional finalists.
24 teams in the tournament are divided into Northern and Southern brackets of 12 teams. Each bracket is then divided into two groups, A and B, with six teams in each group.
The first round of the tournament is a round robin on a single night with each group at a separate venue. Each team will play every other team in the group, with five 25 minute games for each team. Three half courts will be needed at each venue. With a 30 minute rest break, the entire evening will take 3 hours.
3 Point Shootout
During the rest break at Prelims, Regionals and Finals, a 3 point shootout will be conducted. Each team can put up one shooter, with the other team members feeding him balls. The top three shooters will advance to the regionals, where the same process will be repeated. The top three shooters at regionals will then go to the finals at Vivint Smart Home Arena, where six individual shooters will compete with two celebrity shooters.
The top 3 teams from each group will advance to the regionals, again in round robin format with six teams in each of the Northern and Southern brackets. One venue with at least three half courts will be needed, and the duration is again 3 hours, with the 3 point shootout during the break.
On the final night the three top teams from each of the two brackets will meet at Vivint Smart Home arena for a double elimination eight team tournament. The final two teams in the tournament will be by invitation teams comprised of area college basketball stars. The tournament will run from 4 PM to 10 PM, with a one hour break for the 3 point shootout and concessions and 30 minutes at the end for awards presentation.
